Mexico experienced a 35.2 percent increase in tourist travel this summer compared to the same time last year, according to a new report released by the Mexico Tourism Board.

Some 818,278 tourists from different nationalities visited Mexico in June 2010, compared to 605,435 who visited the country in June 2009. Of those, 573,016 travelers arrived by air from the United States, representing a 23.7 percent growth over June 2009. Another 41,184 tourists arrived from Canada in June, compared to 21,322 in June 2009.

“We feel these numbers are evidence of the strength and quality of Mexico’s destinations,” says Mexico Secretary of Tourism Gloria Guevara. “Despite all that’s going on in the world today, the traveler knows he or she can come to Mexico and find unique, vacation experiences offering not only our famous sun and beach destinations, but the chance for archeological, culinary and artistic experiences as well. Mexico is the only place on the earth where you can experience all that in a single trip.”

Mexican tourism officials note that part of the increase in travel is due to AeroMexico’s decision to add new flights between the United States and Mexico. AeroMexico added new flights between Monterrey and Miami in June and a new Monterrey to Houston route on July 5. The airline also increased summer service from Mexico City to San Antonio and Monterrey to San Antonio.

The Mexico Tourism Board serves as an executive agency of Mexico’s Tourism Secretariat and includes participation from Mexico’s private sector.
